(New York City).- New York City Mayor Eric Adams has vetoed a City Council zoning measure aimed at blocking Bally's proposed Bronx casino development. The measure now returns to the Council, which could attempt to override the mayor's veto with a decisive vote.

Adams said the Council’s action had denied the borough “the ability to even compete for a $4 billion private investment that would deliver 15,000 union construction jobs, 4,000 permanent union jobs, and more than $625 million in community benefits.”
The Wednesday veto reverses a Council vote earlier this month that blocked a necessary land use application for Bally’s proposed resort on its golf course at Ferry Point. The project had faced opposition from some local groups and officials who cited concerns about traffic.
Bally’s is one of eight bidders competing for three full-scale casino licenses that will be awarded by the New York State Gaming Facility Location Board. The state gaming board is expected to select the winning proposals by December 1.
The mayor emphasized that his veto was not an endorsement of the Bally’s bid and said the Council’s action created an unfair advantage to the other bidders and boroughs.
“This is precisely the type of action that leads New Yorkers to lose faith in their elected leaders,” he said.
The Trump Organization, which sold Bally’s the land on which the project is based, stands to get $115 million if the company is awarded a casino license.
